Gardening for Birds
we have a small raised bed garden just for the birds : Kale and collard greens, Swiss chard, broccoli for leaves and flowers ( YES the leaves are very nutritious for birds), cabbage, arugula, salads, carrots ( for greens and roots) and cucumbers and we started a small bed with dandelion
Most people perceive dandelion as a garden weed - a pest to eradicate- I love it - beautiful flowers and so good for the birds. I feed the whole plant and it is one of the most nutritious and healthy plants you can find in your yard. Not only that but dandelion is known for it's healing qualities in herbal medicine - if you collect dandelion make sure it is from a NOT fertilized part of the yard and has not been treated with herbicides and pesticides ...
If you want to start gardening for your birds I recommend kale as a good first time crop for birds - kale does very well here in Colorado and copes with sun, little water and frost in the spring and fall - you will have fresh greens from May until November. Carrots are a great option too - the birds love both roots and tops, broccoli grows well too and you can feed leaves and flowerets, cabbage is another resilient plant- try around what works best for you, millet is another great option- I grow my veggies in 4x4 raised beds and they keep my birds supplied with fresh greens from spring until fall.
