Rock Pebblers/Regents
As of June 2013 we have added Rock Pebblers to our aviary. This specie is native to Australia. Adult males have a yellow greenish plumage with red and yellow accents, adult hens are olive green also with yellow and red accents on their wings - both genders have a red beak. Young Pebblers look like hens, the males molt into their adult colors around 1 year od age but tend to be a bit lighter in color even as babies.
The Rock Pebbler is larger than a cockatiel with a pear shaped body, large eyes and a relatively small head, long tail and a large wing span.
Their personality is easy going and gentle, sweet and curious. Rock Pebblers are excellent flyers and need large cages and a LOT of free flight time. They get along with other gentle species like cockatiels and Bourkes only in large enough aviaries . Under no circumstances can they be kept with more aggressive parrots - Rock Pebblers can get seriously injured as they will not defend themselves! They are not needy and can entertain themselves if they have a large enough cage, toys and ideally a partner. They enjoy living in pairs or groups and have a tendency to be more nervous and insecure when kept as single birds. A pair of Rock Pebblers will be just as tame as a single bird - Pebblers have a complex and fascinating social structure and it is a lot of fun to watch the interaction in a flock. My Pebblers have not shown any territorial behavior and breed in a colony cage quite peacefully. They love toys and interaction with their human caretakers. Rock Pebblers are not prone to biting or hormonal behavior and can learn to talk quite clearly. They like to take things in their beak to explore but are not very destructive.
They make excellent pets when handfed but only if you have the space to house them properly. A Rock Pebbler cage should be at least 4 ft wide and 2ft deep - better a lot bigger than that and they need free flight time in addition to this- a few hours every day - they are the most skilled flyers even with a wing clip!
Rock Pebblers are relatively quiet birds with a pleasant low volume voice like chatter- however - they have a piercing louder flock call that is comparable to a honk- and a mating call but they are much quieter than cockatiels and budgies over the day but can make some noise in the morning and evening or when welcoming their caretaker. These birds have a laid back personality and will play with gentle children. They love to explore everything without being destructive or sit on our shoulders and get some love. They make excellent therapy pets as they are so very gentle and love everyone. They are not easy to scare and are easy going and adaptable.
Rock Pebblers do not generally like to be pet - instead they love their beaks touched and kiss their chosen humans. My favorite Pebbler loves to preen my eyebrows and hair gently- for hours! Their vocabulary is impressive and they start to talk very early - at only 3-6 months of age.
Our Rock Pebblers eat a cockatiel seed mix, some pellets, very little nuts/sunflowers seeds and plenty of greens and fruits- they also appreciate meal worms- these birds love to eat and sample pretty much whatever we give them. Rock Pebblers love water and enjoy a spray shower or a bath every other day.
